TBS, Diomedea Cancel Production of Girlish Number Shura
Anime
TBS and diomedea announced on
Thursday that they have cancelled production of the Girlish Number Shura anime. The anime
would have adapted spinoff manga of the same name based on Wataru Watari (My
Youth Romantic Comedy Is Wrong, As I Expected novel series author) and
artist QP:flapper's Girlish Number anime
series.
The companies explained
that guaranteeing the quality and schedule of the production became difficult,
and maintaining the staff also became an issue, and so the production committee
decided to cancel the project.
Shin
Ikezawa (Charlotte) and Yū Tsurusaki (Charlotte) launched
the manga in August 2016 as an alternate absurdist take on the original story.
The manga reimagines the story's aspiring voice actress characters in different
situations, such as Chitose Karasuma becoming a mushroom farmer, Kazuha
Shibasaki playing Little Red Riding Hood, and Yae Kugayama dealing with a
killer gorilla.
Kadokawa's Dengeki
G's Magazine serialized the manga from August to November 2016, and Kadokawapublished
its compiled book volume, in full color with added content, in November 2016.
Sentai Filmworks licensed the original television anime, and it describes
the series:
College student
Chitose Karasuma is determined not to do boring things as she enters the adult
world. To this end, this bad-mannered beauty barges into a facility that trains
would-be voice actors and actresses, somehow landing a job at “Number One
Produce,” a seiyu agency managed by her older brother, Gojo. In Chitose's mind,
she's poised for greatness, but finds herself at a loss when she continues to
only get minor roles. As she clashes with other girls in the agency, including
a cunning airhead and a girl with a Kansai accent, Chitose is about
to learn that there's more to succeeding in this competitive industry than she
imagined.
The original
television anime premiered in Japan in October 2016. Crunchyroll, The Anime Network service, and Viewster all streamed the series.
Project GN is
credited with the show's original work. Wataru Watari (My Youth Romantic Comedy Is Wrong, As I
Expected novel series author) is credited with the original
plan and series composition, and QP:flapper designed
the original characters. Shota Ibata (episode director
for Medaka
Box, Kan Colle, The Mystic Archives of Dantalian)
directed the
television anime at diomedea, and Sumie Kinoshita (The
Mystic Archives of Dantalian, +Tic Elder Sister) adapted QP:flapper's
character designs for animation. The main female cast — consisting of Sayaka
Senbongi, Kaede Hondo, Yui
Ishikawa, Eri Suzuki, and Saori Ōnishi — performed both the opening theme song "Bloom," and
the ending theme song "Ima wa Mijikashi Yume Miyo Otome," under the
group name "Girlish Number."
