Anime studio MAPPA announced
on Tuesday that it is producing a television anime adaptation of Maybe's To
the Abandoned Sacred Beasts (Katsute
Kami Datta Kemono-tachi e) manga that will premiere this year.
Vertical Comics is publishing the manga in English,
and it describes the story:
During a
protacted civil war that pitted the North against the South, the outnumbered
Northerners used dark magic to create monsterous super-soldiers called
Incarnates. Now that the war has ended, those Sacred Beasts must learn to make
their way in a peaceful society, or face death at the hands of a Beast Hunter.
Nancy
Schaal Bancroft, the daughter of an Incarnate, turns to hunting the hunter
herself. But once she catches up with her quarry, she discovers hard truths
about the lives of these Sacred Beasts.
The cast includes:
Katsuyuki Konishi as Hank, a former captain of an Incarnate Soldier unit that
fought on the side of the Union during the Civil War. He always wears a white trenchcoat
with a hood, and is known as the "Beast Hunter," due to his travels
to hunt down the Icarnate heroes that have reverted to being mere beasts after
the war. He still wields his harpoon-like weapon from during the war, and
excels at close combat.
Ai Kakuma as Nancy
Schaal Bancroft, a girl who travels in search for vengeance for her Incarnate
father against the "white-hooded man." Once he encounters this man,
Hank, in a certain town, she learns some of the truth behind why the
Incarnates, and her father, were both heroes and victims of the war, and why
they are being hunted. In search of more answers, she decides to travel with
Hank. In contrast to her neat, traditional attire, she wields a large elephant
gun, entrusted to her by her father.
Jun Shishido (storyboards and episode director for Yuri!!! on Ice, Death Parade, Banana Fish) is making his series
directorial debut with this anime at MAPPA, and Shigeru Murakoshi (Zombie Land Saga) is in charge of the series scripts. Daisuke Niinuma (episode animation director for Banana Fish, Kids on the Slope) is designing the
characters, and is also serving as the chief animation director. Takayuki Sano is credited for Incarnate design. Chikako Kamata (Yuri!!! on
Ice, Banana
Fish) is the color designer, while Hirofumi Morikawa (Banana Fish)
is the art director. Momoko Mifune (Yuri!!! on Ice, Banana Fish) is the
director of photography, and Satoshi Aihara is the editor.
Manga creator
duo Maybe launched the
manga in Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine in June 2014, and Kodansha published the manga's
eighth volume in Japan last August, with the ninth volume slated for Friday.
Vertical Comics published the seventh volume last December.
The duo's completed Dusk maiden of Amnesia manga inspired a
television anime in 2012. Maybe have also been
serializing the Tales
of Wedding Rings (Kekkon Yubiwa Monogatari) manga in Square Enix's Monthly
Big Gangan magazine since March 2014. Crunchyroll is
digitally publishing the Tales
of Wedding Rings manga in English digitally, and Yen Press is publishing the manga in print.
